Founded in 1903, Western Michigan University is a student-centered research university located
in Kalamazoo, Michigan, with an enrollment in excess of 22,000. WMU is Michigan’s fifth largest
higher education institution, attracting a diverse and culturally rich student body from across the
United States and almost 100 other countries.
The University is seeking information and qualifications from Architectural/Engineering firms in
the United States. WMU plans to pre-qualify interested firms for an upcoming master planning
project on WMU’s main campus.
Between now and the year 2023, WMU plans to re-imagine the entire southern portion of main
campus, to include new student housing, a new student center, retail venues, a parking structure
and several other major building efforts. The overarching design goals of this revitalization are
two-fold: first, to provide the latest and greatest in campus amenities in order to strengthen the
University’s recruitment and retention goals and promote student success. Second, to refresh the
visual identity of the Stadium Drive corridor, providing a new face that is more fitting for a
progressive, 21st century campus. Ultimately, the work will help drive WMU’s core missions,
making the University the institution of choice for a wider range of students.
As a minimum, proposed design teams should have experience with:
- Large-scale master planning efforts incorporating a range of building types;
- Cutting-edge higher education projects;
- Projects incorporating sustainable design principles
